Mandrake the Magician the first comic strip superhero was born in 1934. But at the same time, a magician named Leon Mandrake was already performing on the American music hall stages. The real Mandrake, in flesh and blood, looks exactly like the fictional Mandrake, in ink and paper. But maybe the contrary is truer.

A third identity might be hidden behind the two magicians. The name "Mandrake" derives from the word "mandrake", a highly hallucinogenic plant. Can the sleep of reason produce magic?
